Default why is my xj doing this

I have a 96 xj sport 4.0 ho and when i put it in drive the rmps drop to about 500 rpm and when in park goes up to 750 800 rpm what could cause this

Try cleaning throttle body and idle air control. May help with your idle issues...

Cleaned Iac and now idles at 500 in park

How about the port for the IAC? Definitely sounds like the prob since it has changed... Something like a clothes hanger or small screwdriver can be used to break away carbon from the port.

I cleaned the throttle body too so i think the port is clean but I will try that too thanks

uhhhh thats normal. when you put it in drive the torque converter is putting pressure on the engine, so the engine bogs down a little bit. 800 rpm idle in park is perfectly normal.

Really? Mine always idles at 700-800.

I cleaned throttle body and the iac and now it will work its way to 600 rpm after u let her warm up
