So what heat level are we talking when this happens? 212-220?

Ok I got the dowel pins in. To recap, the Clearwater Cyl Head "revised" head design does not come with these intake manifold alignment dowels. They can be had from Chrysler for $3 apiece. In case someone wants to make their own, here is what mine measured to.

Well seeing as I now have every symptom listed on here, I think I can officially join the club! Funny how I was about to change every fluid in my Jeep and I discover this right around the same time...

Just got word from Midas, cracked cylinder head. 3 inch long crack between #3 and #4. HOLY ****. So just ordered one from Clearwater. Awesome phone service, hopefully here in a few days!

okay, think I will add to this ,, I have a 2000 xj with 127000 miles, 2nd owner, full maintenance records, manufactured 8/99 new heater core. no sign of fluid loss or mixing anywhere. I have a smell of antifreeze when it is hot and an occasional misfire when I restart it hot. no sign of antifreeze at tailpipe. nothin in the oil or water or loss. oil pressure good and temp at 210 consistantly. stumped. wonder if I have a bad head or one about to go. thanks gonna go get pressure tested and pull plugs this next weekend to read them for signs of issues. never pulled the coil packs before so gotta figure out how and if there is anything to look for on them.

You don't generally smell any anti-freeze if it is a cracked head; the engine burns it.

I'd concentrate on the radiator; how old is yours? The seams on the radiator are high priority suspects as they can leak just enough to smell like anti-freeze when they start to go. Eventually though the radiator will start leaking.

But yes, a cooling system pressure test is never a bad idea when you smell anti-freeze and can't find the root cause with a comprehensive inspection.

thanks TJ I see your on another post I ran for my issue and you are spot on I think, I saw some weepin at the radiator today but its in a real as you say "snaky" spot to see. not in your face at all. gonna concentrate on those tomorrow when its under pressure with no air flowing over it from the fan. see what happens.
