Jeep Cherokee 1984-2001: Why is My Interior Rattling?
Is your Jeep's interior rattling and making obnoxious sounds? Learn how to diagnose the problem here.
This article applies to the Jeep Cherokee XJ (1984-2001).
Your Jeep's interior is made up of many parts and panels that connect at endless junctions, corners, and cracks, thus causing different areas to be more prone to rattles and other creaks as well as sounds. As with most other things, some may be easier to diagnose and fix than others; if you don't fix it, your sanity will pay the price. Follow this guide to identify some of the most common reasons that could be causing rattles in your Jeep.

Materials Needed
- Flat head and Phillips screwdriver
- Trim removal tool
- Automotive adhesive solution
Step 1 – Check for loose cargo
It could be moving around.
One of the most common reasons for rattling sounds in your Jeep is loose cargo. Whether it is personal belongings banging around or spare tools in the trunk compartment, they can all create annoying sounds.
- Check the side door compartments.
- Check for objects lodged in between the windshield and dashboard.
- Check the trunk.
- Make sure the spare tire and tools are secured properly.

Move on to the following step if loose cargo is not causing the noise.
Step 2 – Check the dashboard panels
They could be rubbing.
There is something called "pressure points" in the interior of every car; pressure points are the different areas of the interior. The dashboard, for example, is more prone to causing squeaks or rattles than others. While you can normally find these while driving, it is recommended that you let someone else take the wheel so you can devote your attention to finding and possibly eliminating the sounds created by these pressure points.
- Run your hands through the top and sides of the dash.
- Once you locate a sound, push or pull against the panel to see if the cause is a loose part or a part that is too tight and rubbing.
- Use tools like a trim removal tool, flat head or Phillips screwdriver, and glue to help with securing panels.

Move on to the following step if the dashboard is not causing the rattle.
Step 3 – Check handles
They could be loose.
Door handles and latches are more prone to creating a rattle, due to it being open and shut thousands of times. Most door latches are held in place with screws, and the same goes for pull handles and armrests mounted directly to the door panel. Most of the time these screws require the use of a Phillips screwdriver.
- Locate the screws that hold the door handle in place and tighten them if needed.
- Locate the screws that keep the pull handles, cubbies, and armrests in place and tighten them if needed.
