This article applies to the Jeep Cherokee XJ (1997-2001).

Tow hooks are by no means a flashy, elaborate, or a complex add on. However, they do one thing very well—getting you out of a sticky situation. When you get stuck in the mud or between a couple of rocks, tow hooks provide a safe as well as secure way to connect tow ropes and get your Jeep out of a bad situation. Tow hooks are also pretty inexpensive, depending on which kind you decide to purchase, and they are also easy to install. Keep reading and we'll walk you through the process of installing a pair of tow hooks on a Jeep Cherokee.

Materials Needed

  • Ratchet
  • 15mm socket
  • 5/16" socket
  • T50 wrench
  • 3/4" socket

Step 1 – Remove front bumper

Remove the three bolts holding the front bumper to the mount using a 15mm socket and ratchet. Next, remove the two bolts holding the plastic fender to the side panel with a 5/16" socket and ratchet. Move to the other side of the fender and remove the remaining two bolts holding it in. If you have fog lights, disconnect the electrical plug from the back of each light. Remove the front bumper.

Step 2 – Install tow hooks

Install the L-shaped bracket, which came with the tow hooks, next to the tab that the front bumper mounts to with a 3/4" socket and the two included bolts. Remove the OEM bumper mount from the bumper with a T50 wrench. Install the hook bracket and then the OEM bumper mount using a 3/4" socket. Putting the hook bolts in the bracket before installing the OEM bumper mount prevents any potential clearance issues. Finally, install the tow hook onto the bracket. Repeat on the other side to install the other tow hook if you are installing two.

Step 3 – Reinstall front bumper

Set the front bumper back in place and reinstall the four 5/16" bolts (two on each side) to secure it to the side panels. Finally, reinstall the three 15mm bolts connecting the bumper to the front bumper mount.
