Jeep Cherokee 1984-2001: How to Install Halo Headlights

Install halo headlights yourself and save a few bucks. What's better, you'll be driving with new lights tonight. It's that quick and simple.

This article applies to the Jeep Cherokee XJ (1984-2001).

Halo headlights, also known as "angel eyes," are lights that light up in a circle or rectangle. Choose from incandescents, CFLs, or LEDs for your Jeep Cherokee XJ. LEDs give you the brightest light and you can get LEDs in various colors for an even more distinctive look.

Materials Needed

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Wire connectors
  • Wiring pliers
  • Electrical tape
  • Electrical tape (optional)
  • Extra wire (as needed)
  • Aftermarket halo headlights

Step 1 – Remove side marker lights

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws that secure the side marker lights.

Step 2 – Remove the bezel

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws that secure the bezel.

Step 3 – Remove the headlight assembly

Use the Phillips to remove the four screws that secure the headlight assembly.

Step 4 – Test to see which is the hot wire

You need to know which headlight wire is the positive or "hot" wire to wire the new headlights. Use your test light to test the wires. Sometimes the positive wire is red; sometimes it's white or other colors.

Step 5 – Wire the halo lights

Wire the new halo lights according to the manufacturer's instructions. When finished, make sure to test both headlights and confirm they work.

Step 6 – Install lights and reassemble

Install the new headlights into your Jeep Cherokee. Then re-assemble the bezel and side-marker lights.
