So I went to the local JY and pulled an interior trunk release from a '05 Ford Focus for $3 Now I can easily release the hatch latch with a slight tug

Well AC compressor finally seized up on me - so I had to pull it and went with a bypass pulley I had the freon discharged from the system at a local shop located behind my apartment, so breath easy EPA
