Engine swap
Hey y'all's, new jeeper here. Bought a 97 zj knowing I'd have to put a lot of work into it. I was wondering if a 5.9 v8 from a 98 would fit easily into my 97, which currently has an 4.0 in-line 6. Sorry if this is a stupid question, like I said, new jeeper. Thanks for y'all's help!
I dont see why an engine swap wouldnt work, but the ZJ 4.0L used a 42RE transmission. The 5.9 used a 46RE. IIRC, the transmission control module is part of the PCM in a ZJ.

Yes you can do that but it would be best to get the whole donor vehicle since the wiring harness, transmission and many other things are different from the V8 and I6.

Yeah the 5.9L V8 will definitely fit, as the ZJ was meant to accept it because of the 5.9L Limited. You'll want to grab the PCM (computer module) from the donor ZJ, as well as the transmission and the Quadra-Trac transfer case, as it'll make everything easier.
