I'm your average Jeep guy. "Drive it till it breaks, then upgrade!" Fourth Jeep. First Cherokee. Having just replaced all the solenoids in a 390k mile 42RE for a 2,100 mile trip my thoughts are turning to what will be the eventual replacement. I'm certain to stay with some version of the 4.0L (likely stroked), but want to replace my 249 with a 242. What to go with tween the two? The electronic 42RE seems fragile and problematic. Heard bad things about the AW4. Some adapter peddlers seem to suggest adapters and GM's TH400 and other like custom stuff. I must admit, in my first CJ I replaced the 258 and Ford T-18 with a Chevy 305 and a Muncie. (Things we do as kids!)

Just now exploring options and would like to hear about some transmissions to consider. Do not intend to start a long-winded fight, just want a bump.
