Trickle chargers
Hey gang sorry if this is in the wrong topic area, but….
any thoughts on trickle chargers for my xj? Two month old Battery died on me last night. I can’t drive it often, so it spends a lot of time sitting. Multimeter read 11.7, but a jump got it going quickly.
anyway, need some reds on trustworthy options.
TIA

+1 on getting a NOCO branded unit. I have used NOCO to keep everything topped off from airplanes to zero-turn mowers. They sell external mount plug adapters so you don't have to have cords dangling around.

A 10 amp will work just fine. It will cost more and will likely be a little bit larger. It will charge a dead battery faster, but if all you need is a trickle charger, you don't need a 10A, or even a 5A, really... I just picked a small marine model, but they probably have other options.

I have the small noco and the small battery tender ones. I like battery tender more then the noco only because it seems to be more tolerant of my shenanigans compared to the noco unit and lets me charge nearly dead batteries. If your going for just basic functions to keep a battery alive, either work just fine.
I have this NOCO
and this Battery Tender

I feel you on not driving the vehicle soo often. I have 4 trickle chargers that tend to always have a home for something around the property. The Schumacher 1.5 amp trickle chargers are available at most box parts stores and have kept mine topped off. Ive been satisfied with mine for some time now.

I have had good experience with a couple of varieties of Battery Tender. I prefer the larger 1.25 Amp version as it is rugged and will charge faster if needed for a discharged battery.
A two month old battery should not discharge quickly in a stock XJ. Even if it set for two months it should have reserve to start. At least that is my experience of my '91 and '00 and other older generation vehicles without a lot of electronic equipment.
Assuming the new battery is OK I believe you have an electrical draw that is causing the problem. Aftermarket stereo system? Other accessories plugged in? Alarm system? Other electrical issue? You might try disconnecting the negative lead of the battery or use a battery disconnect switch right at the battery when the vehicle is not being used for some time.
