Default Stereo turns off when lights turn off

My 92 cherokee needs a new stereo and speakers. While I can do a simple swap...i dont want to swap in a newer stereo unless I can figure out this issue. So im assuming my power is connected to my headlights. i hear alot about peoples stereo turning off when they turn on there lights. Mine however stays on when I turn on my lights. But when I go to turn off the lights the stereo turns off aswell. It does kick back on in like 5-10 seconds. Does anyone know what's going on or does anyone know how to fix it? I simply want the stereo to be on when the jeep has its key turned in the on and running position and turn off when the jeep is turned off. Any info helps
also there is already an aftermarket stereo. But it has to be at least 15 years old. Im assuming the person that installed it before I bought it messed something up.

Either something has gotten loose over the years or the radio itself is going bad.

You DON'T want to connect the illumination wire from the wiring harnesses together (just tape them off so they don't conduct). The factory dimmer is NOT compatible with aftermarket radios. If you want the dimmer, you'll have to control it from within the menu of the aftermarket radio. That's probably why the radio turns off when you turn on your headlamps.

almost exactly my thoughts , sounds like someone connected the orange illumination wire from the Jeep harness to the red accessory wire on the head unit. Lol.

someone needs glasses or better diagrams.
