For those people who want the display to be in the dash, the Sony XAV series use a 7" screen with a single DIN electronics config. Its a drop-in fit when used with the Metra double DIN trim panel. The only thing that's needed is to trim both of the Metra brackets to clear the stereo cavity internals. The left side Metra bracket needs to have its lower mounting point removed to clear the dash structure, but three mounting points for the stereo is working fine for me.
My only gripe for this setup is that the Sony XAV series is the only option for this approach, and the XAV stuff is pretty expensive for what it is. The display quality in their latest model is a bit lacking, and the interface customization options are nothing special. And I hate giving up a volume ****. The best part is that it has a reasonably powerful CPU, so the interface is snappy. Sound is pretty good.
If you can live with the AC vents or AC controls being a little blocked, then the 8" floating diplay headunits from Boss and Jensen are the best options. I have an 8" Jensen in my WJ, and its not bad. The display looks good and is reasonably customizable. And its got a volume **** which I love. But the CPU is pretty slow, so the interface lags. Sound quality is ok. Good thing is that these are inexpensive.
