Brighter reverse lights
Both my reverse light sockets were rotted. So I changed to a double filament socket and bulb. Just splice both power wires from socket to xj power wire. Simple but effective upgrade.

I'm a little leery of that approach. You are asking old wiring to carry a bunch more current.
I've got a half-dozen off road lights (I have no idea what brand) that were on a roof rack when I bought my 97. I'm planning to wire one in as a back up light (using a relay, of course!).
I kinda think that will solve my "backing up a 200 foot driveway in country darkness under a moonless sky and can't see a thing!" problem quite nicely, I think.
Another suggestion I've heard is to use a COB LED stuck on the bumper. They draw so little power you probably don't need a relay.

Most of us I'm sure don't back up 200 foot drive ways. In your situation id wire in aux light 4 sure. Theres also these ideas https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...on+xj+cherokee

I used direct fit 1156 projector bulbs in the reverse lights. It's a white light which makes them much more effective than the stock yellow hue.

Mark the reverse light upgrade helped on mine even where the bumper covers them quite a bit I have to use the mirrors to backup (tinted back glass). I really don't think the wiring should be an issue but you never know.
The overhead backup/work lights work very well but not for use on a roadway I received a warning 2 yrs ago about it. But they do an excellent job and also a set of used Hellas I got with a bumper I had bought. They do have a relay and a switch for them.

My reverse lights only come on when I shift from Park to the 1-2 position and back to park 3 times then into reverse. Otherwise they don't work. Anyone have an idea? (There is a NSS bypass and it's a 1989 Limited 4.0L)

I currently have Eiko 55w 1156 bulbs in my reverse lights. I switched to them after attempting LED bulbs and what a huge difference they made.

Run them off a switch maybe ? My switch on nv3550 stopped working so I mounted a on off switch on my shifter. Dont see paying 40 plus dollars for a switch.
