Default Dash lights hard wired to battery

I bought my 91' comanche and the dash lights and no lights on the inside of the cab. I started messing with wires and found out that the dash lights are hard wired to the battery. I talked to the guy who owned it before me and he said before they all stopped working they use to come on with the switch. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix this?

You have to see if the wiring harnesses are still behind that instrument cluster. My dash lights werent working for a while till i redid all ground issues.

I had this issue in my 79 Camaro. Does it have an aftermarket radio in it? For the Camaro, there are 3 power wires on the plug for the radio. One is hot at all times, one ignition, and one dash lights. The PO wired a radio into the Camaro. He cut the plug off and connected the wires to the aftermarket radio plug. He twisted the dash light wire with the ignition wire and connected to the radio. This popped the dash light fuse and back-fed the lighting circuit from the radio harness. I suggest you pull the radio out and verify the wiring for that. I chased my tail for hours before I figured that out!
