Default Engine temp.

2016 Trailhawk 2.4L temp gauge goes up to around normal while driving we start loosing heat in the cab then the warning light on the dash reads engine temp hot then the gauge drops to 0. Pull over shut the engine off check coolant level and it shows normal and the hoses are all cold or cool. Start engine everything is back to normal drive about 10 miles and the same thing happens. I'm thinking air in the system or thermostat stuck open. Any ideas? Thanks
