2017 Cherokee leak solved
Here is a story about my 2017 Cherokee Latitude that was sold to me back in 2019 at a Jeep dealership with only 17 miles on it, I got a great deal, $17,000 but no one had an answer to why it was so cheap. So after a few months I found a bunch of water under the front drivers carpet, I was able to see how the water was getting to the floor but not how it was getting to the firewall. I took my fender off, sprayed it with Flex seal, in the cowl area, everywhere but it still leaked, I put seam sealer on every seal I could find, still leaked. I would not be defeated, I traced the leak that was coming down the firewall by the toekick but going behind this other small panel, so that panel had a small opening at the bottom of it where the water went to the floor. I caulked that opening, drilled a hole through that panel and through the toekick which led to the frame, I tested my diverting attempt and I found the water did flow into the frame and out of a hole that had a plug in it, which I removed. To my surprise my car now was dry after every rain storm, yippie ! Fast forward to 2021, now after a rain storm and driving away from being parked I would now hear water sloshing under my dash somewhere and depending on which way I turned out of my driveway, the water would actually find a way out and get either side kick panel wet, depending on the turn I made. I searched high and low, could not find a way water got in, I hosed the Cherokee down with gallons of water, no signs of water getting in, only when parked and while I am not flooding it myself. Now I am feeling defeated, but it wasn't a lot of water so I will live with it.
Fast forward to 2023, I get a big chip in the windshield, I get it replaced, I asked the tech to tell me if he saw signs of water and he did ! He saw where I caulked and said I missed the spot by 1/4". As of today, 5/10/2024 I have not had one drop of water in the car in at least 6 months. I would never had thought the windshield would leak from the factory but it did. I also checked the history of the car, the reason it was sold to me so cheap was because it was a Hertz rental car that must have sat unused for months, was found to have water in it, no one at the dealership or Hertz could locate the leak so they put it in the yard at the dealership, threw a low price on it and get some sucker to buy it, me ! Anyhow, now it is leak free and I still am happy what I paid for it.
Just wanted to let Jepp owners know about my leak.
