2014 Jeep Cherokee V6 Transmission, PTU, and rear end fluids
Hi all,
I was wondering what fluid I should purchase to change my transmission fluid for my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited V6. I have been looking at auto stores' websites such as Oreilly's and auto zone, and they say that valvoline max life fluid can be used (pictured below from oreillys website). I have seen Mopar fluid out there, but I do not know which one to purchase for this vehicle. Also, when changing this fluid, how many quarts do I need to purchase to get the job done? I know there is no dipstick, so how do I measure from the fill hole to determine when it is appropriately full?
Next, I would also like to change my power transfer unit fluid (PTU) and the rear end differential fluid. I have seen people use 75W-90 full synthetic gear oil, but is that the right stuff to use? They say these fluids are "lifetime," but I find it hard to believe that they will last much longer given that my vehicle has 161,000 miles on it. I am noticing sluggish acceleration, along with a clicking/clanking noise between 25-30 mph in lower rpms upon acceleration. I do notice when I push on the gas pedal harder that it is reluctant to downshift, so ultimately it feels that my lower end torque is lacking power, thus changing these fluids out. I did take it to a shop for the transmission fluid at around 80,000 miles, but I have no knowledge if the rear end was changed nor the PTU.
Thank you for your time to read and answer this post, much appreciated.
-Lucas B. This fluid says that it can go into car, but I am suspicious of using this.
No changing fluids will not improve anything. Just maintenance. I believe the rear is 75-90. I had to use my mityvac fluid extractor with an extra small hose I had to make to get it to the bottom, there are no drain plugs. Good luck and let me know if you’re able to get any fluid out of the PTU. There’s a check plug in an almost inaccessible location and whatever is inside of it is preventing the hose from being able to suck any of it out. So even though I’m pretty OCD about changing fluids, I had to let that one go. I thought about drilling and tapping the bottom of the case, but I don’t have $1500 sitting around for a part that is possibly on intergalactic back order if it didn’t work
Hi there,
I was able to do the transmission fluid change with no problems along with doing the rear end. I do not know about the PTU. I looked under the car and I couldn't find where the PTU check bolt was. Is it near the transmission? I would like to attempt it, but good to know that having a smaller hose would need to be necessary.
I have a 2015 Trailhawk, can you confirm that the RDM takes 2 different types of fluid or just one. I've read that one side is hydraulic fluid while the other side is 70w 80 and if so which side gets which fluid. Thanks
