Your SUV is not a Jeep and my Jeep is not an SUV
I am a former Jeep owner getting back into the game. I owned a lifted Grand Cherokee before my divorce. It was AWD and guzzled gas like nothing else, but I loved it. Alas, the water pump went out, though. I drove it and blew a head gasket and didn't have the cash to fix it at the time. That was 6 years ago.
Today, I have another life, another future wife (who allows me to play sports and buy toys because it's my money) and I find myself looking for a second vehicle (for cash...loans suck.) I have decided that buying a solid XJ and tricking it out will net me less cash and have way more style than trying to buy something "nice." (by yuppie definition) I'm mechanically inclined and love to tinker and work on...stuff. Besides, there's a big hole in my garage and my tools need the exercise.
Right now we're driving a BMW 3 series, which I love, but you can't exactly pile the kids in it and go camping or kayaking. I'm looking to buy a 99 or later XJ, painting it flat black (myself), lifting it and making it my weekend/fun/project vehicle.*So, I'm looking for advice or any input any of you have.
My plan is to have it blacked out, (tint, lights) lifted, obviously larger tires, replace both bumpers, add a roof rack, tire up top, some lights, neoprene seat covers and a bad-*** sound system built for quality, not "look-at-me-I think-I'm-a-stud-because-my-car-rattles" bass. I think that if I shop wisely, I can pull it off under $7K, which is still way less than buying any other decent SUV and it will be able to take us most anywhere (within reason.) I'm not looking to make it a rock crawler, but something with some attitude that I can take offroad when needed.
There you have it. I'll contribute what I can when I can. I'm now a "supporting" member and plan to get my $25 worth
P.S. The title has nothing to do with anything except my favorite Jeep quote

Welcome! You can definitly pull off a build for under 7K but you will definitly need to shop around for a good base for as cheap as you can. just dont jump on the first xj you find just because its cheap (could cost more in the end). as for other parts like lift and tires definitly look around many different choices out there for your needs. as for tires look on craigslist, you can get a pretty nice set of bigger tires for really cheap instead of buying brand new.

Well, I found a 2001 with 190K on it with stock tires and a 6 inch short arm lift, with braided brake lines and full articulation but he sold it a few hours before I got to it. $2600. I would have paid it.

Yuppie came from Young Professional...someone with a job that paid good money out of college so they'd go buy a BMW to look cool. Big term from the 80s, like Preppie, DINK (Dual Income No Kids), etc...

Yes, LOL, I do drive a Bemmer. And thanks for the warm welcome everyone. As for a "yuppie," that's a term marketers used in the 90's, short for "young urban professionals." And I drive a BMW because I can do 155 in it and take curves at 90 mph that most people can't do 60 around. A BMW is to the road as Jeeps is to the trail. (And it's still stock.)

concerning later model XJ's, just lookout for the ABS, & the dredded Turdy 5. If it's got ABS, it'll have the 35. Besides that my 01' is a great rig! some guys make a big deal with the heads and the worping issues. I haven't had any issues (yet)...
Oh ya... Welcome to CF!
