I bought my XJ completely stock five months ago. It's my first Jeep but I have been around the offroading lifestyle for a good 5 years now. Because I ran into some running issues after 3 months of owning it, I haven't been able to do a lot to it, building wise, but I have put a 4.5 inch Rough Country lift on it and Bridgestone Dueler A/T 33s. I don't necessarily love my tires but they were brand new and free so it's a good start! Mechanically, I'm learning fast with this one and I'm glad to be a part of a cherokee community to get new tips and pointers (:
