Default Soon to be jeep owner

Hello jeep enthusiasts, friend told me to check out the forum saying it was the best place to find what kind of jeep I want at a decent price. I've made up my mind that I want a jeep a few months back, and slowly have been saving up money. I'm not exactly positive which one I want though, since I'm kind of a jeep/off-road noob. I currently drive a 1979 el camino and spent a bunch of time in the el camino forums. I am familiar with the massive value forums have, so I am looking forward to sticking around once I finally pull the trigger on one.

After some research and asking other jeep owners, this much I think I know that I want:

*1999 or 2000 jeep cherokee
*NOT grand cherokee
*inline 6 4.0 L engine
Stuff I eventually want to do:
*lift of course
*safari rack
*winch
*steel bumpers

*Paint condition doesn't matter since I will be turning it primer dark green

...open to any other years/suggestions. Still don't quite understand the difference between the laredo, limited, sport etc?

My goal for the jeep will be a daily driver, but I'd like to be able to take it up into the mountains, basically I want to be able to go anywhere. Also into the whole prepping thing and realize that jeeps can be super reliable and are perfect for bugging out kinda stuff.

I currently have 2k cash. I think I'll be ready to get something at around 4k since most of the 99-00 cherokees I see on CL are around 4-6k, but if I can figure out what I want or find it cheaper that would be great. Any suggestions are very welcome. I shall now explore the forum and await suggestions!

Keep in mind you may need to replace your head.... when it cracks.... I went with a 98 to save me the trouble vs. gambling with the 99-00.
