Cool (Possible) new guy from VA

My first car, an 85 S-10 4x4 gave me the bug. Time went by and I found myself in a 78 F-100. Great, except for not having a live axle up front. I was sold on a full size and in 2001 I wound up with a rare truck, an 87 Silverado - first year of fuel injection, last year of a solid front axle.

I had a stint in a 72 Chevelle for a while. I really miss that car!

In 05 I was doing a lot of driving and ended up parking the truck for mileage and mechanical reasons. I bought a new Corolla. It was a great car and I kept it for 3 years until the recession started hitting home last year and I got concerned about my employment. I'm a carpenter by trade, so I took some logical steps and sold the car, bought some extra tools and fixed the truck in case I had to set out into business for myself again.

The truck is running pretty well, but things at work have calmed down and the price of gas is going back up. I'm ready for something newer and smaller once again. But no car this time. I like interior cargo room. I love 4 doors. I have priced and shopped and read and clicked and I keep coming across the same thing - Jeep Cherokees.

I know the 4.0 is virtually bulletproof. I know these rigs can be modded into insanity. Both of these are in my mind. Yes, right now I need something stock and sensible as a daily driver. With maybe some minor mods. How streetable is a rear locker in these rigs?

I'd also like something newer for traveling. At 8 mpg, the Silverado isn't something you want to go cross country in.

In 05 I also bought a new Polaris Scrambler. Last month my girlfriend paid off her car and bought herself a new Polaris Trail Boss. I'm needing to trailer about 1500 lbs worth of stuff within a few hours of home. Hopefully a Cherokee is up to the task!

Anyway, hi, I'm Kevin from the Va Beach area and hopefully within a couple weeks I'll be officially part of your ranks.

Hey Kevin, Welcome to CF from Dan in eastern Tenn..
I wouldn't try to talk you into anything, so just buy an XJ anyway. You know you want one.

Welcome aboard and I have to say I agree and love the XJ's. Can make very nice street rigs and offroad rigs. Even a mild 2" lift and you have a solid DD with a little extra clearance offroad. Anyways good luck and welcome to the site.

The one I had my eye on was sold. I had the wrong number written down from 2 am. I just called about another. Why is the SAME exact vehicle over $2,000 more from a dealer?

Still shopping. No luck yet. Everybody keeps telling me to look at Blazers and Explorers. I had my fill of IFS with the S-10. Solid axles for me, thanks.
