Fellow Jeepers.... just got my self a 96xj 2 door (hence the name). Looking to lifting it, but debating on how many inches. Other than that just want to keep it looking the way it is. That’s the idea, but I know that doesn’t happen.

That's a clean XJ you have! I like the updated wheels. Good color choice too
i bought this 90 LTD in July 2020 as a Covid project.
I decided to remove the body cladding otherwise it's completely stock.
Welcome to the forum.
How does your XJ ride on your rims? Do you know if the speedo was corrected?
i drove a friends 96 XJ with the 4.0 HO engine and it drives similar to mine but has better power than my stock 90 4.0

Rides stiff, first xj so not sure of ride possibilities (previous TJ owner) Speedo not working, thinking its the speed sensor or gear, just havent had time to fix it.
One of the first things you need to do if you are considering lifting your XJ is determine which transfer case you have. There are 5 different model numbers for the transfer case and anything over 2 inches can cause problems if you have a New Process Select Trac 242 case. The only place I know to get a slip yoke eliminator is Tom Woods & it is over $400.00. You can find a slip yoke eliminator kit for the 231 transfer case for under $200.00. Also if you are planning on adding wide tires you will need to go with offset wheels as anything over 9 1/2 inches wide will rub when you make sharp turns.
