Welcome, from Wisconsin. I always put new wire in, when putting in a new stereo. Because you never can trust, what the PO did. (As you found out) And factory speaker wire is usually 18 GA.,(To Small, and usually worn through somewhere.) Factory speakers are usually crap. (Or are by the time I get the car). That way, I know what I have. And any problems arise, I know where to look. And from the sounds of yours, By the time your done locating, and splicing. You could of had new wire installed. If you want advise on new install. I can help you out. In my '91 XJ, I have two 1" tweeters under the dash, two 5.25" speakers in the front doors, two 6X9" in the rear hatch, one 10" sub in the rear passenger side pocket. A 1400 watt 5-channel amp, under the rear seat powering it all. And I used a really good head unit. It sounds like a concert hall. With nothing really exposed. (looks like a factory install) To tempt would be thieves.
