New - Wanting to do sick things to XJ
Hi Everyone,
For 6 years, I've gotten to help build friends' off-road toys with engine swaps, welding, fuel system conversions - I'm planning to finally get a toy of my own. I have an opportunity to get a 92 Toyota pickup with a completely dead 3.0 POS engine that I would swap with a 3.4, or I could start shopping for a 90s XJ (my preference) and start building on it.
I like the threads I've stumbled across here on Jeeps - looking forward to reading more and sharing my projects.

Welcome to CF! Didn't the early 3.4 have problems as well, head gasket or tranny fluid leaking into radiator? Then there's the IFS. Overall though, the Toyotas are great, I considered getting one. But I'm very happy that I held out for my '94 XJ and I think you'd be happy with an XJ as well.

Hey Jay,
Yeah - the early 3.4s had some issues too. If I go that rout, I would probably get a 97 to 99 3.4 out of a T100 (maybe whole drivetrain if I can get it) with 60k to 80k miles. The swap isn't too horrible. The main reason I was considering the Toyota is I can get the truck free. It's in really good shape besides the engine - no rust or anything. By the time I get what I want done with it, I'm going to be in about $6k, though.
I think I can do a XJ project (decent start) for $4K or less. Wy more space in the truck, too.

My personal experience was selling my last Cherokee because I needed a more highway capable vehicle. I ended up with a Subaru Forester and hated it. I bought a Ford F250 with the FX4 package (and a V-10) and hated that. I ended up back in an XJ. I think the choice is clear.
