Very glad to be a new joiner to the Cherokee community!


I have recently purchased a beautiful 1997 Jeep Cherokee XJ Limited. Absolutely in love with the car!

I'm 18 and this is only my second car, but is it one I intend to keep for life, despite the rocketing UK fuel prices! I also want to try keep it as original as possible and keep it true to its original self.

I have some basic knowledge of working on cars, as I did most of the work on my first car myself, from changing the oil, to replacing the brakes.

Upon getting the Jeep home, I went through all the fluids and they all were in good shape and full. I also cleaned out the throttle body and replaced the air filter. There doesn't seem to be any penetrating rust anywhere on the body or chassis of the car either.


Even though the car is in pretty fantastic condition overall, there are a few things I was wondering whether the Cherokee community could help me with:

- The front fog lights. When I start the car and turn the headlights on, the front fog light switch doesn't even light up on the dash (the rear fog one does). I checked the light bulbs, both of which are in good shape.

- Speed 3 on fan blower doesn't work. All other fan settings and the air-con work great, its just that as soon as you turn the fan speed onto "3", it has the same effect as turning the fan off.

- Antenna doesn't go up or down. Upon turning on the electrics in the car, I hear a whirring sound, which suggests the antenna motor does work, but for some reason the antenna itself always stays up and does not move. I have tried gently pushing down on it, but it wouldn't budge.


Any tips or suggestions on how I could go about fixing these issues would be very much appreciated!

I had a 97, until a careless person in a Suburban ended it. Loved that car!

We generally take "how do I fix this?" questions to the Technical forum. I suggest a separate thread for each issue, because it can get confusing, otherwise.

The fan speed is probably the resistor, or possible the switch.

The antenna is broken. It's internal to the unit. Motor's working, but the mechanical parts are busted.

I have no clue on the fog lights, but they are a known trouble spot. Didn't have them on mine.
