I'm currently looking at Purchasing a 1989 Jeep Cherokee. It's got the 4.0L I6, automatic transmission and 4 wheel drive, with just under 300,000km, I'm going to spend only $400. Before I make the plunge, I'm wondering if there are any common problems with these vehicles that I should be looking for. My intent is to build myself a 4x4 that will get through virtually anything.
I'd appreciate any sort of feedback, both on mechanical challanges I may face, as well as where to look for budget concious off road parts (lift, grille guards, fender flares...etc.)

Take the plunge. For $400 you can't go wrong. If the motor blows tomorrow you can recoup your money by parting it out.
There are a lot of places that cater to XJ aftermarket. Just google what you are looking for and you'll find several places.
Order a free catalog from Quadratec or 4WD and you'll be able to see what's available even if you don't buy from them.

^^Evil has the right idea. 300K you might have some blowby but it is still rebuildable. That would be a good price for it and everything is available from one source or another.
