Default NEW HERE and need some advice with Tires and Lift Kits

Hey all,
I'm new to this forum or any jeep forum being that I just bought my 96 Jeep Cherokee the other day! It's got about 217,000 miles on it with a re-built engine that has only 40,000 miles on it so I'm good to go for now. I'm looking into lifting this bad boy and putting some nicer tires on it...the thing sits as low as my grandmas corolla right now!
So i was looking into Rough Country lift kits and saw how cheap they were....does anyone know much about these lifts?!

Also, does anyone know the biggest size tire I can go on my 4x4 jeep without having to lift it?!

Thanks!
Chris

Welcome! Congrats on the new XJ!

Rough Country lifts are notorious for not lifting as much as they advertise and sagging. I personally haven't owned one, but it only takes a little searching on here to scary you away from them. I would recommend a Zone lift. From what I've seen, they are pretty cheap and are a good, mid-level, lift. I have a 4.5" lift on my XJ and it still sits at 5"+ after several years of use.

As for tire size, it really depends on how much you want to trim. You can put 33" tires on there with some aggressive trimming, or 30" tires with no trimming. If you go with a lift, you have even more options.

Thanks a lot! I'll have to see how much trimming is really involved but a lift kit is probably the best way to go

Here's a pic of I think lowrange2's rig: stock and 33". Just to give you an idea of the trimming.

On topic.. Look into rubicon express, old man emu, clayton, rock krawler..those are the best names..
If that doesnt fit your budget then id say go with rustys.

I like rough country... Alot of people will advise you otherwise but really for the $$ you can't go wrong. I could probably tell you something wrong with every company..But the Esp with the new shocks and bushings that they are using its big improvement over the old RC stuff.

You could fit 31x10.50's stock but you would need a rim with 3.75 backspacing to pull it off.

This is my jeep 3inch series 2 RC lift w/ 33s

Side question: do you have a sye? I wanna put a spacer in mine to even out the added weight of bumpers and stuff but I only have a tcase drop. I do plan on getting a sye soon but I'm just curious

No sir, no sye or T-case drop. I vibe a little between 25-35 then goes away comes back roughly 60 or so but I don't drive this that fast so no worries there.
ill try and get a picture of how far out of the transfer case my shaft is, its not far, ill toss it in my build thread and you can check it out if you want?

3" Rusty's lift with 31X10.5. Stock wheels with 31's will rub on the lower control arms. Those are 3.75 backspace wheels, the only trimming I need with them was the bumper endcaps which are gone now.
