NEW GUY Grand Rapids MI 98 XJ Classic
Hey all,
Great forum, I've been tooling around for a few days meaning to make my introduction, so here goes.
Bought a 1998 XJ Classic w/ 138k 2 weeks ago. Found her on Craigslist in Chicago, kind of went out on a limb as far as not getting her checked out first, but the guy seemed like he was quite the enthusiast and had taken care of her pretty well. Plus I got a pretty good deal, so here I am. Always wanted a Cherokee, and now I have one. Score.
Things I need to fix:
1) missing hood release (have to use pliers)
2) e-brake handle busted
3) driver's side window doesn't work (found the fix for that on here - trying tomorrow)
4) fog light switch I think is bad (I've heard they burn out??) Not sure if this one had them stock - the ones on there now are aftermarket but there is a switch on the dash - anyone know if XJ Classic had them stock? Hoping so.
5) some noise when turning at low speeds, noticed power steering reservoir is dry, filling up in a few hours here, hoping there's no leak in the system.
6) tear in driver's seat - need recommendations for seat covers that work w/ the power seats
Everything else seems pretty good. Runs very well. PO had new Goodyear Wrangler AT/D2s put on very recently. I understand these were made specifically for Sam's Club or something and have mixed reviews. Particular concern to me because we get a fair amount of snow here in Western Michigan, part of the reason I wanted the Jeep. Anyone know anything about these?
Also, I've discovered two approx. fist-sized rest patches under the driver's feet. Enough to where I can push up the upholstery from below. Everything else down there looks just fine - what's the easiest way to fix?
Anyway, happy to be here. Thanks for the input.

Go to local hardware store and get a metal plate and screw/glue it down. Easy but crude.

Thanks for the welcomes and the reply - follow up question: 1) would I first cut out the rust spot and 2) would you advise to attach the metal from the bottom or from the top (under the carpet).

Yes, I would cut out/clean up what rust you can. Put some rust proofing paint on the floor pan area and the patch plate. Attach said plate from the top using rivets, self tapping screws and/or weld it in place.
I had a decent size hole in the floor pan right above the muffler. Used a steel plate attached with self tapping screws and high temp rtv to seal it up. Not a pro way to fix it by any means but gets the job done.

Answer to ?4 is yes they had fog lights factory, have a 98 classic myself and my switch does not work. I installed a set of Hella lights on mine and put the switchin the center of the overhead console.

Hello from WI., I have a brother that lives in Charlivox. Yes they did make factory fog lights. ( see my album ) And there is a factory spot on dashboard. New factory fogs, are about $80 apiece. A bit steep I thought. I believe the wiring is in place from factory, just not being used. Check ebay, craigslist, junkyards for org. lights & switches. There fairly common. A Chilton man. can give you. the schematics if needed. But factory fog lights are only useable with the low beems. Swith to High beem, and they go automaticly go off.
