Default New to Cherokees not to Jeeps

Hey guys,

Name is Adam. Just picked up a 99 cherokee classic automatic. 187k on the body, around 12,000 on the new motor and rebuilt transmission.

Little bit of background on me. I've worked in the auto industry for over 6 years. Had over 20 cars 2 of which being jeeps. Come from a jeep family.

Always wanted a cherokee and finally obtained one. Super excited! Power everything. No sunroof. Everything works EXCEPT: passenger side window switch. Driver front lock actuator. And may have some heater core issues (steam/smoke comes from vents at times and I can smell coolant.) additionally there is a loud squeak coming from the engine bay (maybe bearing or belt?) other than that I love it!

Happy to be apart of the xj group and can't wait to mod it up like my wranglers.

Any insight into my little foibles would be much appreciated. Can't wait to meet you cool people (hope this is as good as wranglerforum.com!)

-Adam

I'll upload pictures of past and current jeeps asap.

Welcome, lot of great info on here. If you're gonna mod your XJ it'll be a lot cheaper than your wrangler.

Power windows & such. Always an issue with our XJ's. First check the wire loom from your drivers door (in the door jamb). Wires get broken there often. My 01 is temperamental, when it rains really hard, windows won't roll down for a day or so. Oh ya, power locks stop working too.

Good luck, plans?

Well I fixed all of the speaker issues and put in 4 brand new ones. Sounds much better!

My list of need to do's consist of the two issues from the OP as well as fixing the headliner, fog lights, front bumper and addressing some minor rust issues.

As far as modifications are concerned I'm looking at the 1.75 spacers and some 31x10.50 BFG all terrains a safari rack so I can get my spare up there and open up space in the back and hopefully some fun cheap mods along the way.

Any suggestions are welcome!
