Default My first XJ, been searching for quite a while!

Hello everyone! My name is Anthony, everyone calls me Hobbit, hence the screen name. I've been searching for an XJ for a quite a while and have finally scooped one up. I went to look at it at night and didnt have a flashlight to fully examine it and found more rust than I was liking to have but oh well, it'll eventually be sunk in some mud so not really to worried about it. Its stock and I don't plan to leave it like that for very long... Its having a few minor mechanical issues that have to be worked out. Not too happy with the guy who sold it to me as he definitely knew there were a few things wrong that he didn't inform me of but I guess no one to blame other than myself. Its a 2001, auto, 4dr, 4x4 its been painted patriot blue but I think it was originally green. I want to put 33x12.5 (wider if possible) on it and have did a little reading on here you can do it with a 4.5" lift. I'd like to go higher but not too sure if that was very stable and what other things I'd have to do as well. Any insight or direction on routes to take(and or brands to use or stay away from) would be greatly appreciated! I'm was trying to post a pic of it but can't seem to figure out what Im doing wrong!

33's will fit on 4.5 no problem, and 3 inches it you trim and bumpstop enough!

Welcome to CF!

Thanks for the welcome guys! I need to figure out this picture deal, maybe the photos are too large? Who knows, I suck at computers, I'll figure it out.

Would it be okay(and look good, as well as being safe) to lift it higher than 4.5 and still put 33x12.50 on it? I know they have high roll over rates. Rough country seems like a good cheap lift but have read the thread on here about bushings and shackles(I think it was) having problems...Have they solved the problem there?

What else would need to be bought to run a 4.5 lift as far safety and preventive measure of breaking things? Slip yoke eliminator? Drop down brackets of any sort(maybe they come with the kit)? Long arm kit or not? So new to all this... Thanks guys!

Ok first things first, search. I know thats not the answer you wanted but it really helps because you start learning how to do a lot of crap haha.

For photos, try using imgur or photobucket then just copy the link and paste it into your post. If your on the app there is a button to upload from your photos and then you can post them and insert them into your text.

At 4.5, you may or may not need an SYE. Every Jeep is different and post 96 models are more prone to vibes. At 4.5, depending on which tire you choose, you might have to trim your fenders (or flares and bumper caps if you keep them) so the tire doesnt rub. Another important feature will be bumpstopping to limit uptravel into the fender opening.

I ran 3" and 33's and would have been fine with a little trimming but i was adding another 1.5" so i didnt yet.

If you have the money, check out Rubicon express. Great parts. RC's springs at 4.5 are too short and cause a terrible shackle angle so it give an awful ride. The front springs are fine though. I have their 3" ones and a spacer. I would look into a RE 4.5 kit with full leaf packs and then you have to decide what shocks to get (Bilstiens if you have the $$)

As far as stability, i dont run sway bars anymore. Im at 4.5" on 33x10.5's and 2wd for ****s and giggles haha. The rear is useless and RE's lift instructions tell you to ditch it. A lot of people use disconnects up front to run on road and disco offroad for better axle articulation. Read up on a few threads and you will learn a ton.

You can piece lifts together for cheap also.

At 4.5 you will be fine on short arms (I am). Long arms are awesome but not a necessity and you wont need Control arm drop brackets until 5.5" of lift.

Go look for the all lift and tire questions in modified tech and ask some lift questions in there

Any more questions just shoot, names Will btw!

good luck with it! I think the 4.5" lift with 33's would be sweet. I personally have been trying to find someone boastful enough to do 33"s with a 20" rim. Nothing gawdy but a stock wheel from a dodge ram should be durable enough. I think 20's would look a a little funny with anything less than a 32" tire.
