Welcome to the family, forum and the sickness known as older (vintage) Jeep ownership.
Lots of good people here. While older XJs tend to be needy children at times.... the benefit is that parts are fairly readily available still, and at decent prices.. plus you can wrench on the thing yourself without needing to be a rocket scientist like you do on brand new vehicles.
they're pretty basic, so basic issues are generally what come up the most.

I have found some of the sickness ... I'm a pretty well versed auto head with a full sized shop, lift, multiple computers to read ecus, paint booth etc. I bought the thing without a transmission in it and put one in, did all steering components/ball joints etc, rear main seal, new gas tank, new brake and gas lines, fuel sending unit etc... thing was pretty immaculate looking and has a mint interior with only 130k on it. its a late 1996 model so its got half of the 97 stuff in it and half the older. Having trouble with TC lockup being inverse from what you would expect and I've swapped the tcm, tps, adjusted throttle cable, changed solenoids... shifts great other than going into TC lockup when under load aka hill or trying to accelerate and unlocks when cruising... And its not a pressure issue because the TCM is sending the signal incorrectly... even scoped a bunch of stuff while driving and cant seem to figure it out.....
