Hi, could be a problem with your clutch. But be sure to pump the hell outa that pedal for a while before you do anything else. If no luck there. Take off the slave cylinder, don't press the clutch while this is out or it'll all pop apart. When the slave is off put your finger in the hole in the gear box where the slave was and you should be able to feel the fork that the slave cylinder push rod sits into. Should fell like a little small dish that your finger sits into. kinda hard to explain. When my clutch release bearing broke that fork arm got stuck and I couldn't fell it when I put my finger in as it was too far back. It meant that the slave push rod wasn't pushing against the fork which left me with no clutch and a really soft pedal. If this is the case its gearbox out I’m afraid. But hopefully that’s not your problem.

Cant get into low gears.
Hi guys and especially you local lads from Ireland. I have a 98 XJ and I can't get it into first or reverse gear without stopping the engine and restarting in gear. There is no appreciable drag when I do this so I guess the clutch is disengaging correctly. Am I also looking at dropping the gearbox and replacing the clutch.
I cant seem to find a Haynes manual for the diesel version, is ther any other publisher who does the manual for my diesel cherokee. I love the car but she is beginning to turn into a *****. I have just paid €470 to have the starter motor replaced and that hurts.

hi bobby, sounds like your clutch is worn out, i had a few motorbikes over the years that had the same type pf problem and it always turned out to be worn plates!
i tried to find a haynes for the diesel too but it turns out they don't make one for the diesel. but i heard some where( maybe on this forum, i can't remember) that its the same engine as a Nissan Frontier which does have a haynes. maybe do a search on the forum to find more info on that.
i heard the startermotor can be a ***** to do on them, but i'd have a go first! although 470's not too bad.
the 2 top bolts on the gear box are ment to be a nightmare to get out! but a mechanic friend told me if it has been done before by someone most likley they have left the 2 top nuts out when putting it back together. which doesn't do any harm. this was the case with mine.
also make sure you disconect the cranck sensor befor droping the gear box. i forgot and riped the wires out and had a nightmire fixing it because they're sealed. and pricey too! but i fixed it!
the best way too get the sensor out i found was from the top of the engine.
i can talk you through it when your are doing it if you want!
two of us took out the gearbox on a saturday and put it back in on the sunday. its tricky but not too hard if you're ok with your hands!
anyway hoep i helped a bit.
best of luck noel

Clutch
Many thanks for the advice. I guess the problem has to be faced and dealt with. I bought my Jeep in UK and got all the extras, Leather, Crruise, Multistack CD and Tape, Air Con etc. Oh! and a bad clutch! But I still love it, It's a big Tonka Toy

Hi, Some time since I was on this topic. I sorted my clutch with a new slave/master cylinders, they come pre charged with fluid. I bought it from the states it was far cheaper even after p.p and customs. If you want a manual come parts list you can get them on cd off ebay,it covers the diesel models too. Mike

Hi, Sorry missed this from my last reply. On my TD Sport there is a silver/grey pipe aprox 1/8 dia coming out of the passenger side (n/s) bulkhead with a 90deg rubber female connecter on the end. It is some sort of vacume pipe, came off when i replaced the brake pipes but can i hell find where it connects to. Can you look at yours and let me know please. I hav,nt found anything not working but each time i lift the hood it bugs me. Cheers ,Mike

Hi Guys.
Can I say how pleased I am to get so many responses in such a short time. The jeep community seems to be very active and friendly. Fireman 263, I'll have alook under the jeep to try to see the pipe in question. Just give me a day or two until the ground dries.

Hi, The pipe exits the bulkhead and can be seen when you raise the hood, you don't need to get under the vehicle. It exits from behind the glove compartment? Its such a small dia pipe and connector, I have searched but cannot find where it fits.It is some sort of vacume connection as when you put your finger over the end you can feel the suction. (maybe fuel/injector pump). Tks for your time on this.Mike

Is this the pipe? My last jeep (same engine) had this pipe also. the valve on the end fell out and the engine wouldnt start until we stuck a plug into it. The mechanic thought it was something to do woth the engine stop circuit? This ofcourse might be all crap.

hi Bobbyw,No thats not the pipe but thanks for the pic. I will take a photo and attemp to post it but I have never done it before so will have to seek advice on that one too. Both my sons are computer literate so will ask them,I believe I need to put it on picaso first? Is that a td? Thanks again. Mike
