Default Hello all

Hello everyone I am new to the world of jeeps. I am a convert from the other side (cough Toyota cough). I am looking heavly into selling my toyota and getting a XJ, but am not sure which year to go for. I want one that has a 4.0 in it. so i am mostly looking into a 90-95 i dont have the money to get a 96-2000.
can you guys recomend what you think the best year for a newbie jeeper and offroader would be?
and also what could i look for when going to look at used ones?

Thanks

JP

Hey Welcome JP! For me it's a 95. It's the one and only Jeep that I have ever had, but its been good to me and I have made it work its poor little wheels down to the gears as my Search and Rescue rig for five years. But Im sure that some of these other guys have been doing it much longer than I have and if theres a better year Im sure you will hear about it.

Welocome,
I had a tacoma before i got my xj. The only reson i got rid of it was bc of the expanding family trying to fit in an ext. cab. I have nothing against toyotas but i love my new to me XJ.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. I have a 90 Toyota 4runner I am in the process of selling to be able to buy a Cherokee. Thank you for all of the helpful advice I have been browsing through it slowly but surely. I have been looking at Cherokees with the legendary 4.0's.
are automatics good for off roading??

Thanks

Thanks

I am enjoying these forums and learning a lot. is the any articuls on the forums that explain what to look for when buying a xj?
I was also wondering what year the silver Cherokee is that has the big tires in the pictures under the forums( usually has the adds next to it) I really like the way that one looks. as for years I have been looking m,ore and more into the 1991's as i see a lot of them readily available and i think they would be a great starter XJ.

what are your guys opinions of the 91's?

I have a '91 and also have had a '89. I love my '91, but since those are the only ones that I have had I really don't know if its a good year or not.

But something to keep in mind is also that the older it is the cheaper it should be. So if you can get a '91 for less then a '97 say, but take that savings and dump into upgrades you might be better off in the end... Just a thought.

Welcome, 91" owner here. I love it! Sticking to mostly stock appearance my self. Did swap out the crap stereo. Replaced the headliner ( including replacing the digital compass/temp gauge in the overhead console, Which are incredibly hard to find ). Changed it over to HID headlights, and fog lamps. ( big difference ). Next on the list is a 2.5" Old Man Emu suspension system. ( sagging susp. anyways, pics in my photo album ) It's a daily driver, and still a puppy at 68K.
