Default College kid from Delaware looking for a Jeep.

Hey!

I'm looking for a Jeep Cherokee, and I'm wondering what exactly I need to be looking for. Are there and hidden problems? I will be using it as my DD and will be driving on the beach occasionally. How much should I pay for a 1996-2000? What is the maximum mileage at which I should purchase?

Thanks!

Maximum mileage? What's that? XJs have no maximum mileage and will run forever with proper maintenance.

Avoid 2000-2001 Cherokees because they have bad heads. I think that's the years.

Agree with the first part, somewhat disagree with the second. If you're looking at a 2000, look for the signs of a cracked head. Google 0331 head for more information. You just have to find a good one. What it seems like to me is that there was a bad batch of cast iron on those heads (whether it was the mold or process), resulting in the problems we're all familiar with. If you're like me, you may get lucky and end up with a good one. 142,000 miles and no problems.

Not saying I'm out of the woods either, as Chrysler certainly should have placed a recall on these heads. But, you should certainly be more wary of the 2000-2001 XJ's. If you're willing to chance it, go for it. I love mine and would gladly replace the head if it cracked (or the whole motor if I ended up doing more damage).

If you get one with an 0331 head, be a responsible Jeep owner and check up on it regularly. Other than that, enjoy driving through the zombie apocalypse with your XJ.

Outstanding! I cannot wait to get my hands on one! Should I be willing to pay over KBB value?

I wouldn't. I picked mine up for $500 but it needed some cosmetic repairs. Runs and drives top notch though and I fixed all the damage for under $300.
