Bonjour from Canada
Just bought my first cheep jeep two days ago, 600 bones (canadian). The humble four pot is a bit less than I hoped for in terms of power, but cheap is the name of the game here. Another reason it went so cheap is that the 4x4 reportedly doesn't work. I havent tried it yet, but I'll get around to it after I check the links. Also the hatch is cracked, but I'll get around to fixing it or scabbing a piece of sheet metal onto it or replacing it. Thus this is the beginning of my jeephood. I want to wheel it in the summer and save my XR4ti from the salt in the winter. I want to get a little more power out of it for the highway and a bit of lift, but reliability is my number one concern. Any wisdom to be shared?

welcome. In case you didn't already know, your hatch is fiberglass not steel. Your 4wd issue is likely a vacuum line, at least that is where I would start first. As far as power, you're not going to find it with that 4 cylinder in there.
If you have plans for lift and tires I would personally hold out until you can afford to buy a 4.0L cherokee, the difference is night and day.
Just my thoughts.
