I just picked up a 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 170k on the 4.0 inline 6 from a long time coworker. It's all stock, pretty well cared for via service records, and will stay that way. I have 300' of driveway and 70 miles a day round trip to work on country roads and the Jeep will be my tool for that job during the winter. I noticed it has a 23 gallon fuel tank so I suspect mpg will be pretty bad.

I also have two VW Jetta TDI's and a first generation Dodge Cummins truck, as well as a 72 VW bus and a 48 Ford 8N tractor. The bus and 8N are projects, engine out of the bus, 8N needs restoration. The TDI should offset the Jeep's mpg hopefully.

I've owned over 100 cars and trucks but this is my first Jeep and first 4WD since owning a 1976 Scout back in 1983 or 1984, I can't really remember for sure. I know I ended up walking to work a lot because the Scout didn't run and when it did run, snow came up through the holes in the floors.

I drove the Laredo 30 miles home and watching the oil pressure and temp gauges, it seems plenty healthy. I've heard good things about the 4.0 engine. I do have some questions I posted on this Jeep thing called death wobble and I'll try not to ask whatever I can find out via searching.

Thanks

Joe

Welcome to the forum. Regarding the death wobble, jack up front end and rest it on jack stands and have someone turn the steering wheel while u look under, and check for any unusual activity.

Often it's the track bar that is bad, but it could be the ball joints etc.

Replacing the steering damper doesn't cure death wobble, it merely masks it up. So that should be a last thing u need to install.

Good luck!
