1996 Cherokee Sport - New Here
Hi everyone. I'm new here and to the Cherokee world. I just got my Cherokee yesterday 1/24/09. It's a 1996 4.0L with 163,000 miles and seems to have been well maintained. How many miles are these 4.0L engines good for? I'm told 200,000 to 300,000 easily, I hope so. I've owned a YJ for the last 2-1/2 years and it's killing my back!

Hi, i just joined as well but i am a veteran of the XJ.
Ive seen well maintained stock xjs go well over 300k. My 87 went to 247 before i sold the engine. Do normal maint, and keep your eye on the rear main seal and you will be fine. Any questions feel free to ask.

hey welcome, i'm new around here myself, wheel a '96xj like you, and how interesting that you bought your xj on my birthday! happy birthday to us. incidentally, keep up with the basic maintenance and i imagine you'll get many, many miles out of her. 200k and then some!!!

The guys are right, just take care of it and it was last 200k easy. My dad is a used car dealer in Colorado. He has no problem buying and selling jeeps with 150k+ and usually drives one with this many miles himself. Welcome!

Welcome from VA. I'm on my 3rd XJ. My 1st was a 89 pioneer. I bought it with 135k and sold with 240k for the same price I paid for it. My 2nd was a 97 that my wife wreaked. finally my current, a rare 2001 with a 5 speed (NV3550).
