Default 1996 cherokee limited v8?

Hi to all. I am new to this forums and am about to pick up a 1996 Cherokee limited v8. It has 170k on it motor and trams was rebuilt at 140k. I am getting it as trade for a truck I really don't use. Is there anything major I should check on this particular year? And are they reliable trucks?

Check the transmission and transfer case if it's full time 4WD. You can test the transfer case in a parking lot by doing figure 8's at slow speed and seeing if the front wheels want to hop or chirp as you're turning in either direction. That's usually a sign the viscous coupling is getting ready to go bad, or already has. Repairing it isn't cheap, replacing the t-case with a used one is the usual fix and is cheaper.
