1997-2001 Jeep XJ custom metal security console inserts
Ok so I will be working on making a prototype "security" console insert for 97-01 XJs since they aren't made and sold by anyone. I plan on making a few different versions. I'll be making a normal sized one and then a larger sized one for people who want to remove the are vent under the console. It will be a few weeks until I can get one made but just putting this out there.

I'm glad you decided to do this and I certainly hope my encouragement pushed you to make this thread sooner rather than later.
With that said - put me down for a "normal" sized one. I assume it will be compatible with the wonderful metal console bracket that you make (mine just arrived today - super fast shipping)?

Fantastic. If you look at the link (and the pictures) I sent you - it seems like you just need to make a horizontal space where the engaged e-brake would be.

I need to source some a good hinge and lock. I'm looking for a cam lock with a finger pull on it.

I am very interested in this! I just posted a thread about re-doing my console for lack of organizational features but what I really want is a locking security console wide enough to fit a cb or mobile radio in! Very interested!

Hi,
I work with locks and I also run a hobby lock picking forum out on the interweb, so I've very well versed in high security locks, and I've seen the metal boxes that drop into center consoles being sold on ebay and could not find one for the XJ. I am interested in one as well, a short one to replace the stock plastic contrainer, but what do you think you will be charging per box?
As for a way to pull them open, a finger hole is probably simplest, or even simpler, use the key to pull it up.
I do not recomment a wafer cabinet lock for this as anyone with a paperclip can pick it open or drill it quickly, so if you're keeping anything in there like a gun or important paperwork, tools, etc. I'd get a Medeco or Abloy cam lock on ebay. I have a buddy who is an Abloy dealer in Duvall Washington, but you'd be paying retail with him.
There are cam lock tail piece kits available of different bends and lengths, and you could just cut a slot in the side wall of the container that the cam would turn into as you lock the lock.
They make cam locks in several flavors, some you have to relock it and then it lets you remove the key, that's called key retaining, some you can insert key, unlock cam lock, and remove key with the lock left unlocked.
what gauge steel were you thinking of fabbing this out of? the top door could also be lift out instead of hinge, just add a couple slots into the wall opposite the cam lock slot, and weld on a couple tabs on the cover/door, and the door would simply lift out when unlocked or you can cut the slots and bend the tabs in such a way that it acts as a hinge. some alarm panels on home burglar alarms use this method.
Hope to see this project gain traction,
Squelchtone
ps. here is a Ford one on ebay in case folks want to see what this would look like: www.ebay.com/itm/221398983185

I'm not quite sure how much I'll be charging for the box. It all depends on how long it takes to make and how much material is used. It will be made of 16 Guage steel.
