Can you confirm it is a NP231J? It looks like but I wanted to confirm. I need one for a 2000 Cherokee with the 4.0 and auto trans.

Since you've been in there I thought I'd ask you another question.

My t-case exploded at the front output the other day.

I suspect really bad u-joints at least on the front driveshaft.

Either way, I was hoping to find a way to test to see if my transmission was still good.

T-case exploded going 70 MPH down the highway. In it's current state nothing happens when I have engine started and put it into gear....just some grinding noises as I put trans in back in park.

I checked the ATF and it is all still there but it does smell a little burnt. It was driving and shifting fine before the t-case explosion and the last time I checked the ATF it was bright red and smelled fine.

Do you think I trashed the transmission too?

Probably not. The grinding is from the broken transfer case, not the transmission itself. The transmission has nothing to turn now. You'll likely need to replace the transmission's output shaft when you swap the transfer case.

I like my NP242.

You might want to post a photo of the tag.
