Hello all,
I've never had to post anything to have my many questions answered because a thorough search always yields great answers from our members. I've read as much as I could about gear ratios but STILL wanted to get someone's opinion on my situation. I currently have a 31's on my 6.5 lifted XJ with stock axels (D30 & d35) running on 3.55 ratio. I want to upgrade right away but wanted to know what exactly do I need to do so (besides ring and pinion) and what ratio should I get to satisfy my current build but to also accommodate larger tires (maybe 35?) in the future? I'll use my jeep for daily driving in the winter here in the northeast. Does 4.56 strike a happy medium? Thanks all!

Heres a chart most of us go by http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-ti...atio-chart.htm and if you want 35s later on that dana 35 will need to be replaced. The good news on that you can swap in a chrysler 8.25 from another xj.
4.56 is a good gear for 32-35 's , but dont waste money regearing a 35, get a 29 spline 8.25 as stated above. throw a locker in that rear too if you going off road , you'll be glad u did.

By all means trash the D35 and get a later model Chy 8.25 29 spline to replace it. As far as gears the very bottom is a 4.56 and better yet for 35's would be 4.88 or 5.13's.
I have 33" tires and 4.56 gears now and wish I had went with 4.88's at least because I may step up to 35's later on.

Thanks a lot, guys! This is really good advice. I'll now have to find that Chrysler 8.25. Hate the prospect of going out to a junkyard for this as we all know it's a crapshoot but perhaps I'll get lucky. Is it a clean swap (D35 ->chry 8.25) or will I need anything else? Also, I went to Quadratec and looked at the gears but there's a dizzying selection of options they have there. Any good pointers to which one to go for?
Once again, thanks for helping out this first time Jeep owner!
