Default Wrangler axles in a Cherokee?

hey i am looking to replace my 2wd jeep axles with some from a 4x4. i need to get some dana 30 or a dana 40 or what ever they are(kinda forgot.) i was wondering since cherokee stuff can be hard to come by if i could use axles from a wraangler? they basically have the same drivetrain layout.....correct?

Depends on the series wrangler. But yes some ofe the axel are direct swap, TJ and ZJ fronts are direct swaps. For the rears IDK for sure so stick to XJ, maybe leaf sprung wrangler axels will fit. The 8.25 was used in over 20 different Chrysler/Dodge models alone I'm sure you can find something. You just need to match the gearing.

8.25 isn't your gear ratio. it's the measure of the diameter of the ring gear in that axle, thus the name. you'll need to make sure that both axles have the same gear ratio, which chances are they'd be 3.55. just find a front and rear axle that both have 3.55's to start with.

yeaah i know that i don't have 8.25 gear ratios. i have the exct number somewhere. i have a list of every single cherokee produced and what years had what options and specs. but you think i can just find a tj front end and just try to match the gear ratios with teh rear. or do i have to have a specific rearend.

that axle isnt gonna work for you unless you are swapping to leafs in the front or weld on all new link brkts, coil buckets, ect....

you need one out of an xj, tj, zj, or mj for it to be a direct swap.....no yj's. yjs didnt have coil suspension from the factory.

its kinda odd that you can find wrangler parts more than cherokee parts. they made a bazillion cherokees and about half as many wranglers. here in colorado, there are 10-15 per junkyard per month and axles go for $80-130. maybe not so many cherokees down south?

Wrangler front axle should be low pinion, Cherokee (except 2000-2001) front axles are high pinion. Not that big of a deal, but helps with the vibration problem when you are lifting it.

For simplicities sake, i would stay stick with axles out of a cherokee. there all direct bolt in. look for an hp d30, non vac-disconnect for the front, and a 97+ chrysler 8.25 for the rear. get the same gear ratios, and bolt those suckers in.

like he said wrangler dana 30's (front axle) are low pinion and are not a desirable swap whatsoever. also, they mostly came with a dana 35 rear end which also isn't a desirable swap.

i vote to stay away from wrangler axles

ok ok cool. so if i can find a cherokee front end that has 3.07 gears and than that should do the trick. un fortunatly im only 17 and to go to the local pull a part is a pain in the ***. they dont let you bring in the tools that would get these parts out easily(at least for me......sawzall, plasma cutter and an impact driver. only wrences and **** like that are allowed.) so yeah. but i did see a cherokee it was a country and mostlikely a 96 and below due to the header panel and the trim package. i got a ney grill from it. hopefully it is still there and i can maybe sneek my dads portable plasma cutter ito there and i can just cut that thing right out of the front and then match up parts when i get home lol.

Cracks me up that all of you said something about him having to find a rear axle... lol... all he needs is the front... and a transfercase... and some small stuff...

To the OP... if you have 3.07's then u have a manual 4.0 Cherokee right? Gonna need a front axle from another 4.0 manual...

he said he needs "axles"... plural

he's got a 96, so we'll assume he has a 27 spline 8.25, or a dana 35 which he'll want to upgrade. and he has 3.07 gears, which he'll also want to upgrade to a deeper gear ratio since hes already replacing the axles

to the OP- are you lifting it and putting bigger tires on it in the future? if so your going to want to find something with other than 3.07's (3.55's, 3.73's, 4.10's) might as well upgrade your gear ratio while your at it

it currently is lifted. it has 31's and a 3.5inch lift. i may want to go with other gears. if i need to then i will or if it will be better for my jeep and less strain on the engine then yeah .
