Would this 78 Ford Truck With d44/d60 Be Good?
I saw this truck on craigslist for $700 or offers. Its got a hp d44/d60 4.10 geared.
How much work would it be to make these axles work in the xj? Would it be like full cutting and welding new brackets, shock mounts, perches and so on?
Would I need full custom front steering setup too since the axles are wider?
Also since they are wider would it make the tires stick out to far and not be street legal?
thanks

SInce it is the combo listed.. it should be 8 lug.
IN order to get it to work you will need to weld a truss and mounts on front, and perches and shock mounts in the rear.
Steering would need to be worked out.. your stock setup will not work. If you plan on running them with the brakes that came on it you will also need to change your master cylinder to a bigger bore, cause your stock one will not flow enough fluid.

The axles are a great price. However, you would be better off doing a long arm three link front and welding the bracket on the right hand axle tube. The rear is just a matter of spring pad relocation and driveline work. But if you use those brakes the master cylinder will be too small so that will have to be changed. And as mentioned above, the steering linkage will be a custom fab.

so it'd be a full custom off road rig with those axles, thats pretty much what I thought. The truck seems like a good deal though, get the axles and scrap the rest for a few bills.
When I go to upgrade im prolly gonna have to find a xj d44 so it can be a drop in thing. Though I could deal with welding the leaf perches on im sure, no idea where to get that kind of stuff though.

You can find everything you need here.
Mine is wide and it's still perfectly street legal. In SC.

I pretty much fab all my own stuff, so I think the $1500 is quite reasonable. It is the front that is expensive with hydro assist and high steer.

Correct. I'm just figuring that if he's asking about a d44 being bolt in, he probably isn't going to be doing his own gear installs......that blows a grand or more per axle right of the bat for just the install alone, then add up lockers, truss flat tops, 1 ton steering, 3 link or long arms, and your dumping money into them by the truckload. I've seen people do swaps and keep it on short arms blah blah blah but why do so? I'm currently bulding my axles right now, and saving money for tires and rims. Hp 44 with TnT truss, 5.13s, arb front selectable, mollys, flat tops, OTK...with a rear ford 9" 5.13s with a full spool and 35spline mollys. Tires wil be ordered next month, 37x12.5x16.5 pitbull rockers on recentered H1 rims with weld on locks. Its easily the most expensive mod I have ever done to my jeep, and will ever do to my jeep.....good luck!
If you paid 1k per axle for a gear install then you got ROBBED! Either you got robbed or I need to move to where you are and start doing gear set-ups.

When I do this eventually (hopefully) I WILL be doing it all myself, To me theres no point of doing it if I'm not going to build it, plus I dont want to pay labor lol.
I think it could be done for $1500 as well, not counting the axles themselves, or tires.
good infos though thanks

I prob have less than that in mine, also not counting tires and wheels, but I know how to set up gears which saved me a decent bit.

those are pretty much the ideal axles from the ideal year ford truck.
the d44 is most likely an HD 44 with 1/2 inch thick tubes.
you can get a truss that welds on the front axle that has all your coil buckets, shock mounts and control arm mounts built in to fit your xj.
the rear is very easy too.
stock gearing in those axles are most likely 4.10.
grab them for sure. you won't find anything better for that price.
