A winch isnt something you wanna cut corners on. You think saving a few bucks is worth having your life line of recovery fail on you when you need it most.
Personally id only buy Warn but ive heard good things about superwinch, ramsey, and smittybilt.

Id say go for either the m8000 or the vr8000..both good winches.

It should be rated at minimum 1.5x the weight of your fully loaded rig.

For an XJ I wouldn't go smaller than 8K.

I got an 8k and hasnt failed me yet. I can pull out fullsize rigs also. Make sure and carry a ****** block and tree strap for when ur really deep in the ****! Or need to pull someone heavy and stuck. My rule of thumb is double the weight of the vehcle but thats kinda overkill.

8k, but no bigger than a 10k.

3/8 cable is perfect to get a few more feet. 5/8 will work, but it's pretty big, and you will get less on the spool.
synthetic is even better.

besides, you can always use a ****** block for a 2 line pull to double up the rating.

I am running a XRC8 on my XJ I have not had to use it to recover myself yet, However I have had to pull a TJ up a Rock waterfall with (2) 3-1/2"-4" tall ledges , and Pull a CJ up a hill covered with just over 12" of snow with no issues at all.

(The Hill drops off just off frame )

I ran the RC 9.5lb winch on my xj. It was cheap, yes. And I bought it used. But I used the hell outta that thing. Performed dozens amd dozens of pulls with it, and it never failed me. Its sitting in my garage, and ill instal it on my next rig.

I have the 9k Engo. Have made many self recovery pulls and pulled others with it. No complaints and it was under $300 shipped!

I a ramsey 8500lbs with a four coils on a reciever had it for 1.5 yrs and on the first was the first time i used it to pull myself out. I have used it to pull many rigs out. I try to carry ****** blocks tow ropes drings and gloves. watched a budy fillet his had open on a cable that had frayed. and a random on if im pulliing something heavy i put a shirt or towel on the cable incase something comes loose. I recomend if you got the money going synthetic

I got my MileMarker SEC8 (8,000 pound) several years ago on sale for $229.00. Right now, I have it mounted on my pick-up ('76 Dodge Power Wagon). It's not really big enough but gets used several times a week for loading logs onto my trailer to haul them to the mill. At tax time, I'm getting a 15,000 pound winch for the truck and the MileMarker is going on the XJ. Like above, you want a winch rated at least 1.5 times more than your vehicle weighs. Use a ****** block to double the amount that it'll pull. Make sure to get some chains and ALWAYS (if at all possible) use a strap or tree-saver when hooking to a tree so you don't damage the tree.

DON'T use chains them for pulling in a recovery.

You CAN use them to attach a Jeep to a tree to keep it from going over.

Don't use chains to attach to a tree that will give the greenies more ammo to use to close down trails. They make these things called TREE SAVER STRAPS. For a reason
