So I just got my winch (XRC8), haven't mounted it yet but I was wondering, since I didn't get a waterproof one, can I mount the control box under the hood, run the wires out to the winch through the grill and run the controller into the cab?

Is there a reason most people do not do this?

This way it would stay drier and I possibly could use the winch when its under water.

Any advice would be great.

sure you can do that, you can mount the control box in the back if you had long enough cables.

only downfall is you have to open your hood, but in all safe reality, you should have the hood open whenever you use your winch anyways.

you can even mount it in a spot so the winch controller can plug in through the grille. most yj/tj guys do this since the slots are open.

Another thing that is easy to do with that winch is in-cab winch controls. I have mine setup to use my in-cab mainly but i left the control box on the front and have not had any problem. I have not had problems with the winch submerged either.
