will these 6.5" speakers fit front and rear in my xj?
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DB65...95#details-tab
...yesterday I installed a head unit and foctory sized alpine speakers in my xj....I cant stand em there distorted at high volume and want to return tgem for these polk db651s. I hve them in my jk and they are awesome speakers. The only problem is there 6.5" ...witch I want because of the larger size witch means more *** and alittle more bass... they are "slim mount" 2.5" mounting depth. Please one of you audio gurus let me know whats up.

Should fit 97+ with no modification in the front. Crutchfield had different mounting depth listed than what the Polk site has.
I'm installing the dxi6500 components in my 2000 xj. The speaker housing diameter and height are the almost exactly the same size as stock. (Speaker internals are different, of course.) They can be mounted in the stock location using the stock screw holes. (I'm going to drill out two additional holes for mine.)
On the Polk site it looks like the db651 speakers are the same size.
If you search for it you can find the exact clearance available for top mounted speakers and still clear the windows.

They will fit the front doors and the rear speaker bar, of course you will have to drill new holes for the bigger size but they will fit in the hole.

I find this interesting. There was no way a 6.5 was gonna fit in the front doors of my 2000. I tried. The basket bottomed against the side of the hole with at least half an inch between the door and mounting surface. How did you guys do this without spacers or cutting the hole bigger?

The tailgate gets very heavy with even 5x7's installed, subs would probably require new or upgraded hatch struts.
6.5's have better sound quality than most 5x7's anyway, due to their shape. I have Image Dynamics CTX65's in my front doors with no issues. Even running a thick foam ring between the speaker and the door, and it still clears the door cover just fine. It is a midwoofer though, so a coaxial speaker w/ tweeters might have mounting issues clearing the factory speaker cutout.
They ARE slightly mis-aligned though (stock speaker grille is only ~6" accross), but it doesnt seem to affect sound quality.

If you want a sub get the sub thump stealth box. I have it and it's great, fits my 10" shallow sub and I never have to worry about it being in the way

On top is the stock 5.25" speaker. Below is the Polk 6.5". Note the tabs extending out from the stock speaker. The Polk mounting holes are built into the basket.
It's hard to show in an image, but the stock and Polk mounting holes line up. Note that the speakers also have a very similar depth.
