Nope he's good. He didn't suggest that I get a box of rice instead.
No everyone is misunderstandin me.
I love this jeep I'm gonna drive it til the wheels fall off. I just wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong or if something wasn't right for me to be getting the milage I was. I had an s10 before this...that I was able to get a pcm tune for and was getting 18 in the city with a lead foot.
I settled for an s10. I paid 1000 bucks for it, fixed it up sold it and bought the jeep

extra weight and I think there is still resistance from the front axle even though it is not "utilized" in 2wd

No I did not buy the jeep for sippin gas. Yes I did think they got better milage than this. No my cousin is not an unreliable source, he's easily one of the best gm/jeep mechanics in the state. I might not know the whole story with his xj, that's just what I thought I remember him saying.

Now...that wayyy downstream o2 sensor? The one obviously measuring emission gases or whatever it's giving that po138 code I think where it's being shorted electricity...if it's in the wiring I'm gonna cry but if the sensor itself is bad I'll replace. Just wondering if thats makin me run lean

Later year XJs use all the O2 sensors for fuel trim.

97+ AW4

Best mileage: stock size tires P215s, stock exhaust with oe pellet cat, stock injectors, stock suspension, small payload.

Worst mileage: heavier payloads, 235s, new exhaust and with honeycomb cat, 2 inch lift, new springs and shocks, new o2 sensors, other sensor replacement, ... much of which is aftermarket items.

Tires and payload, depending on vehicle options and gearing, 215s often obtain the best highway and city mileage along with your payload and how you drive.

Automatic transmission, lower speed driving, keeping the gear selector in third sometimes helps with mpg.

Cherokee's original design dates back to the late 80s, using a lighter uni-body taking off around 1000 lbs was to replace older and larger gas hungry SUVs.

Back in the 80s fuel economy for some SUVs and 4x4s was 8 to 15 mpg. 15 being very good.

Worst milage 235's? I'm sure some of these guys on 33's/35's/37's would disagree.

You should still expect decent milage on 235's

~13 - ~14... carrying tools, spare parts, recovery, etc.

I drive in sand often so gas mileage varies.

I've averaged 16-17 in the 4 years I've owned my XJ, 3" lift on 31's. But I don't speed and or accelerate like a teenager anymore.

mine gets 21ish with 0 interstate use. I have a 15 mile drive to work, which is just about split 1/2 and 1/2 of 45-50 mph and 0-40. I got 23.99999999999 on basically an interstate only run this summer with the ac blowin at 73-76 mph. I've done nothing special other than maintenance. the jeep is 99% stock. I saw no mileage increase with the injectors, airbox removal, etc. I had a 200 lb passenger and each of us had enough clothes packed for 3 days.

also, I completely disconnected my downstream o2 roughly 6 months ago and have seen 0 affect from doing so. 97 2dr aw4 4wd xj.

I don't accelerate very fast, only, occasionally not to block traffic, to prevent accidents and have been accused of driving like a grampa ....

I think its mostly the additional weight and heavy sand that lowers my average mpg.

There may be other issues with the PCM, sensors, perhaps shifting, overall wear with 190,000+ miles ...

The primary purpose of the PCM programming is for emissions. Essentially the PCM will sacrifice fuel economy to lower emissions.

99 4door auto 4wd 3" lift 31s

I get about 13-14 overal, that's a lot of stop and go traffic, cruising around town, and back roads. I drove about 2 hours doing 70-80 and averaged 16. I was pretty pumped about that haha
