23 years of off roading. Never seen an axle bent up at the middle. That's why all the support bars you can get are ALWAYS to prevent from bending wheels up, pumpkin down.

not likely ball joints or bearings. What are the odds of that happening on both sides at the same time?

If steering rods does not have obvious looking bends in them then: upper and/or lower control arms. If the camber is off IE upper or lower control arms got bent, that could/would give that funky look.

doesn't mean it can't happen. I've seen that in junk yards. trucks landing on something hard and the axle makes a frowny face. he could have landed on top of something like a rock or stump, turning the middle of his axle into the fulcrum of a lever. but I see what you're saying too, it's usually a smiley face.

The pic isn't nearly good enough to make any real diagnosis.

Yup, X2, even if its just a V8 Zj tie rod. Same price but much stronger. Although, I've been eyeballing your 1 ton upgrade for a while. Someday...

Should I jack it up to change it or leave it on the ground? Is it just the two bolts and swap it out or does anything else need to come off?

You will need to jack up the front end and remove two bolts. Then realign after you put the new tie rod on. I'd recommend having a shop do your alignment

There's no reason to pay anyone to align an XJ. There are hundreds of write-up's on the www.
