Weird noise/vibration
So after wheeling this weekend I noticed that I get a weird sound, almost like tires scrubbing when I hit ~65 mph. It seems to pulse about twice per second but does not seem to be in time with anything else. It does speed up when I hit the gas though and changes with my speed. It gets worse as I speed up.I also get the same sound when I am stopped with it in drive, but once I get above ~10 mph it goes away. No check lights or anything are on.

UPDATE: so it seems that the noise seems to be coming from the transfer case. It took some hard hits but isnt leaking any fluid. I didnt have time to check the fluid level but I know it was ok before this weekend. Any thoughts?

I just checked the bearings and there is almost no movement. Couldn't find a socket to fit the drain/fill plugs so didn't change the fluid yet. As for the chain could be I guess? I don't know a lot about these. What would be the symptoms?

changed the tcase and transmission fluid. got rid of the of the noise when stopped in drive, but no change in the noise at speed. Noticed that the noise seems to be when I hit a bump or when I have to get on the brakes. Sounds almost like tire rub but I cant see any or any signs of it. Thoughts?

i have a similar issue and figured out it's the pinion bearing of the rear axle.
remove the rear driveshaft and drive around in 4HI part time (not full time in case you have the np242) see if it stops the sound. if it does, it's either in the TC or the axle. since my pinion seal started leaking again and the sound comes from further in the rear rather than under me, i figured the bearing is slowly going bad (no play or clunking yet, but the seal is leaking).
bought a junkyard 8.25 in order to swap this axle and do a disc brake conversion. the bearing might be 10-15$, but the labor costs to get to it and replace it and put everything back together is too much for me.

Not sure of your setup, but did you try greasing the slip yoke?

oh right i didn't notice grand cherokee. the idea is the same but now about the full time, i'm not sure if it'll work like i first thought.
when i tested mine, i first put it in full time mode (np242) and since, i guess, it acts in the same way as an open diff, only the rear yoke was spinning (because there was no resistance), no power was transferred to the front axle. so then i made sure it stopped spinning and put it in part time, voila! i could now drive. hopefully it'll work out for you
