do you know where your friend got his rear dana 44? I don't think those ever came factory in TJ

the D30 in the TJ will bolt into an XJ, same dimensions, the TJ's were all low pinion, the XJ was all high pinion until '00.

TJ rubicons had a D44 rear, some regular TJ's had a 44 rear, and all TJU(LJ) had a D44 rear.

Confirmed, that's exactly what it is.

Part of the push for doing a 44 front was for strength and because we thought it would need 4.88 or 5.13 gear. After a little checking I realized that 4.56 will do fine so I'll probably suggest he keep his 30 and spend his money on a good axle upgrade and maybe truss it.
