I recently acquired a transmission from a 1998 Grand Cherokee. Thinking it was an AW4, due to my lack of research, I planned on using it to replace the AW4 that is currently in my 88 XJ. The AW4 in my XJ is toast, got water into it from a blown oil cooler (I know, I know). My question is, will the 42RE or 44RE be a feasible swap? Or should I sell it and find another AW4?

I would sell. The aw4 is a more reliable and stout transmission. The grand transmission is larger and will require modifications to trans tunnel. You would need the computer for the grand trans and I imagine the driveshafts are different as well due to transmission length being different than the aw4. You can find in my area a good used aw4 for $100-150 all day long. Sell and do it right.
